What happens when your life goes from fact to fiction overnight? Sadly, Tracy Hall learned the answer to that question when she swiped right on ‘Max Tavita’ in early 2016, a Bondi surfer and the chief investment officer of a family office.
Initially, Tracy had been drawn to Max’s love of the ocean, running and living a lowkey lifestyle.
But after 16 months together, it was his deeply empathetic nature, intelligence and commitment to building a future together that made her trust him with her heart – and her life savings.
What Max’s dating bio didn’t say was that his real name was Hamish McLaren, and that he was a con man in the ranks of people like Elizabeth Holmes, Bernie Madoff and Anna Delvey.
Of course, Tracy didn’t know any of this until a fateful day in July 2017, when she watched news footage of the man she loved getting led away in handcuffs in front of his Bondi Beach apartment. Shocked and confused, Tracy never thought something like this could happen to her. After all, she was a whip-smart, successful single mum who prided herself on her intuition. However, Tracy was a vulnerable divorcée and Hamish was a master manipulator. He couldn’t have picked a better target.
In the weeks, months and years following Hamish’s arrest, Tracy learned that the man who held her at night wasn’t just plotting to steal her life savings. He had also spent the last three decades conning victims out of $70 million-plus dollars across the US, Canada, London, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Sydney. In 2019, Hamish’s lies landed him in prison, and his story was exposed in the podcast, Who the Hell is Hamish? And now, Hamish McLaren’s famous last victim is ready to share her story.
Loved Tracy’s style, warmth and raw honesty.
I could not put this book down.
Thank you Tracy for sharing your experience.
An astounding insight into the way “Max” mirrored Tracy’s goals and desires in life to chameleon himself into the perfect partner while plotting to strip away her life savings. I am in awe that Tracy completely owned his deceit from the day of his arrest, despite the immense trauma this realisation caused. A gripping read from start to finish. An amazing writer and a tale worth telling. We can all learn from this.
It’s vulnerable, jaw dropping and filled with unexpected humour.
Highly recommend this for your next read!
Tracy Hall and Summer Land have put together a very decent piece of reporting. It details the way hard working single mum Tracy was taken in by a serial con man. Devastating as it is to lose savings and superannuation, the bigger blow is to one’s self belief and ability to trust, to find joy and security in life. There’s an interesting chapter on the why’s - what kind of person does this several times, and is the motivation simply greed or is there more to it? The book is also good on how Tracy put herself back together after the shock, the devastation, the sleuthing for answers and the eventual court case. She’s an admirable woman. Credit also to journalist Greg Bearup.
What a raw, honest and vulnerable account of what is clearly the worst time in Tracy’s life. This is the story of a loving and trusting woman that, somehow, has been to hell and back and has managed to maintain her dignity, her identity and incredible warmth in her heart. I read it in two sittings (and that wasn’t by choice, other commitments made me put it down). My copy has been passed on because I think the messages and lessons are very important. A great book from an inspirational woman.
I couldn’t put this book down . A fast paced, compelling true story providing a fascinating insight into how manipulative and clever these fraudsters can be. Some valuable tips on how to recognize the red flags of psychopathic behavior and strategies for healing and self-care. Highly recommended.
